The First North American flight of the P92-TD returns a classic look to the skies!
On Friday, May 12 2012, The Tecnam P92-TD took to the skies over Virginia for the first time on the North American continent! The test flights were accomplished by Ron White, Dave Lubore, and John Greenwood, as they took the aircraft up on several flights to put the aircraft through its paces and see how it performed. There were no surprises in its performance, and it handled beautifully, just like its other brothers in the Tecnam P92 line. The following are Dave Lubore's comments on the flight...
"The aircraft, which is equipped with the new Lycoming 233 engine, started up easily, and with the free castoring tail wheel taxied readily in the calm winds that morning. After doing the normal pre-takeoff checklist, we used the flaps 15 degree position, and I found it to be not a problem to maintain centerline by looking slightly left over the nose. The aircraft came off the ground in a three point attitude at 50 knots, and we were off flying. We climbed to 3000 feet to check out the initial maneuverability. We started with steep turns, followed by slow flight, power off and peer on stalls. I found nothing surprising here. Stalls were just like the P92 tricycle aircraft that I have many hours flying. I did find the aircraft was rock solid in pitch, which I contributed to the additional weight of the new engine over the Rotax engine. When we returned to our home field, it was time to see if I could still remember how to land a taildragger. The first landing it was a nice three point landing, with the aircraft settling in nicely and staying right on the center line. We took a short break, and then returned to the air to do some air to air photographs. As always the Tecnam behaved well and gave me no problems as we flew close formation to get some great pictures. I think the new P92TD will make a great addition to the Tecnam line of Light Sport Aircraft. It's been said before, but it can be repeated, some time in a taildragger is not only fun, but will improve your flying, especially landings in all aircraft. Great job on another great aircraft, Tecnam!"
